Dawn at the sea

The Salton Sea is a shallow, saline, rift lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault, predominantly in Southern California's Imperial Valley. The lake occupies the lowest elevations of the Salton Sink in the Colorado Desert, and its surface is presently at about 226 ft (69 m) below sea level. In the winter months, it becomes home to ten of thousands of waterfowl and hundreds of Sandhill Cranes. Each morning at first light, there is the ever increasing sounds of ducks, geese, and cranes as they awaken and prepare for their departure to their daytime feeding areas. In less than an hour, the spectacle of countless thousands of birds taking flight will be over, but for a few that decided to sleep in. If your looking to test your skills and give your tripod and fluid head a workout with some up to 180° pans without tripping over the tripod legs, getting practice of in-the-air fast moving subjects in the viewfinder and keeping it there, this is one of the best and weather friendly places visit during the winter months. All shot with a Canon XL H1 with only the stock 20X lens.
